The Teachers Who Make It Possible

When the Halifax Regional Arts Jazz Band performed at Halifax Jazz Festival’s Big Band Day, it wasn’t only the students who felt the excitement For Ryan Froude, the band’s director, watching his students step onto the TD Main Stage was a moment he’ll never forget.

“Seeing my students perform on a professional stage was incredible recognition of their hard work,” Ryan says . “To hear them play for an appreciative, supportive audience — it was a proud moment that reminded me why we do what we do.”

That opportunity, made possible through the Artie Irwin Award, gave the students a taste of what it feels like to be part of something bigger — the heat of the stage lights, the applause rolling in from the waterfront crowd, the realization that their music matters.

“Performing at the Halifax Jazz Festival uplifted our students and gave them an unforgettable experience,” Ryan reflects. “It’s moments like this that inspire them to keep growing as artists. I’m so grateful to everyone who helps make this festival thrive — it’s an integral part of Halifax’s arts community, and I hope to see it flourish for many years to come.

For Ryan and educators like him, these performances are about more than music. They’re about possibility — the spark that turns a classroom dream into a lifelong passion.

Paul Chui, longtime HJF board member, summed it up best:

“When you give to the festival, you’re helping create the next generation of players. You’re giving them their first real professional audience.”
