Just 23 years old, Reeny Smith has been singing since she was five. (She’s still a choir member at Saint Thomas Baptist church in North Preston.) Her family is a veritable who’s-who of Nova Scotia gospel and soul veterans: Wallace Smith Sr. and Jr., her grandfather and father, are former members of the Gospel Heirs (formed and still based at Saint Thomas); her father currently leads the Hallelujah Praise Choir, and her uncle is Carson Downey.
Even without that pedigree, Smith’s silky soulful voice—honed as a jazz major at St. F.X.—is undeniable. She’s quickly become a rising R&B/hip-hop artist in just a few years, accomplishing much in a scant amount of time, including an opening slot for Grammy winner Lisa Fischer, winning three African Nova Scotian Music Association awards, and in 2015 being named Artist-in-Residence at Casino Nova Scotia. A sensitive, powerful performer, Smith will transfix you as she lifts you up.
