Marketing & Publicity Assistant - Canada Summer Jobs Program (see criteria below)

Contract Position: April 29, 2019– August 2, 2019
Remuneration: 35 hours per week, $15 per hour

Jazzeast's mandate runs from the promotion and presentation of the annual TD Halifax Jazz festival to soft-seat concerts, club shows and educational workshops (such as the renowned Creative Music Workshop).  We develop opportunities for aspiring and established musicians, those employed in the creative economy, and the local "jazz aristocracy". We bring renowned performers from many parts of the world to a city that doesn't always find itself naturally on the maps for touring artists. In brief, we think music, especially jazz is important to the vibrant  culture we have and we want to make sure that the foundations of jazz culture remains strong in Halifax.

Reporting to the Marketing Manager & Festival Publicist, the Publicity and Marketing Assistant is primarily responsible for:

  • assisting members of the marketing team;

  • developing and implementing the festival's social media plan;

  • overseeing volunteers to execute the social media plan during the Festival;

  • working with volunteers to coordinate pre-festival promotions and street team activities at key events and locations;

  • monitoring and recording media activity;

  • scheduling Emcees and speakers, act as on-site liaison;

  • preparing and delivering Emcee scripts;

  • writing media releases;

  • promotional writing including press releases;

  • communicating with local artists to arrange media interviews;

  • editing marketing materials such as the festival guide and website;

  • gathering statistics for measurements and final reports;

  • developing and executing distribution plans for promotional materials and maintaining the database of locations and contacts;

  • communicating with local artists to arrange interviews;

  • creating a file with all media clippings for future reference


  • 1-3 years related work and/or communications experience

  • Related working experience with festivals and events     

    This position is generously supported through the Canada Summer Jobs Program. To be eligible you must meet the following criteria:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age on April 29, 2019;

  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,

  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.


The successful candidate must:

  • demonstrate  excellent spoken and written communication skills

  • work well independently and as part of a team.

  • demonstrate a capacity to work with various types of technology including Festival management software, websites, and social media.

  • possess a valid driver's license

  • have the ability to plan quickly and effectively, coupled with a flexibility to adapt to changes that are thrust upon you unexpectedly

  • have excellent time and personal management skills


  • dynamic and creative personality

  • ease in public speaking

  • capacity to develop and maintain strong relationships (e.g. with JazzEast's sponsors, partners, staff and volunteers

  • ability to manage the competing demands and expectations of multiple stakeholders

  • capability to remain calm and solve problems quickly under pressure

  • the willingness and competence to work collaboratively with staff and/or volunteers on a variety of projects

About Halifax Jazz Festival: The TD Halifax Jazz Festival, formerly known as the Atlantic Jazz Festival, is the oldest jazz festival and largest summer festival in Atlantic Canada. Designated a Hallmark Event by the Halifax Regional Municipality, the festival attracts up to 55,000 visitors, involves 450 volunteers and employs over 350 local musicians.
