Last year, the great percussionist Jerry Granelli turned 75 years old. He's been playing spontaneous jazz for 55 of those years. Granelli was a member of the Vince Guaraldi Trio when they recorded the soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas, and has shared stages with Sly Stone, Ornette Coleman, Lenny Bruce, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and the Grateful Dead. Since moving here in the 1990s, Granelli has been a key influencer, educator, and innovator in Halifax's jazz scene. These five concerts are a celebration with old and new friends from Nova Scotia, and around the world.
At the heart of this series is the Creative Music Workshop (CMW). CMW offers a place where student musicians and a faculty of internationally known musicians come together each year to explore the endless possibilities of improvisation.
The grand finale concert will premiere new music written by students as well as collaborations between faculty and students, offering a showcase for CMW students to share what they have been creating in a community environment. Listen to the results of hard work, collaboration and risk-taking.
